On May 20, Golden Year 14 (2017), His Excellency Francisco “Lú-Olo” Guterres was inaugurated as the new president of Timor-Leste.
Timor-Leste is a young democratic country with a population of 1.2 million, located in the Southeast Asian region. Having experienced many years of the struggle for his homeland’s independence, President Guterres lived his life as a soldier who yearned for the freedom of his people. Over the years, he formed a deep relationship with the villagers who cared for him in times of need, and remains today a symbol of hope to his co-citizens.
A former leader of Timor-Leste’s parliament, President Guterres once said, “I don’t want another war. Seeing a rifle makes me want to throw it away. I’m tired of fighting.” He stressed the need for “peace and stability . . . to build love, to move forward.”
The new president has pledged to accelerate national development by creating and strengthening economic sectors such as manufacturing. He also vowed to improve the living conditions of the Timorese people by providing better access to healthcare, education and sanitation.
Supreme Master Ching Hai sent the above letter to His Excellency, conveying Her best wishes for Timor-Leste.
