His Excellency Klaus Iohannis was elected president of Romania on November 16, Golden Year 11 (2014).
President Iohannis, who had been serving as mayor of Sibiu since 2000, is noted for helping to renovate the town’s medieval city center. Sibiu was rewarded by being named 2007’s European Capital of Culture. Under his leadership, the city has become a popular tourist destination, has appealed to foreign investments, and now has low unemployment rates.
His Excellency emphasizes the importance of having a government that is transparent with leaders who are accountable. He also advocates a strong, independent judicial system. During an interview with Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle, President Iohannis explained his vision for the future of Romania, stating, “In concrete terms, my vision is that of a strong and prosperous country, where everyone does his job, where projects are completed to standard, where the laws are valid for everyone, where politicians and institutions serve the people. Together, we can build the Romania we’re hoping for.”
