On January 24, Golden Year 13 (2016), His Excellency Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was elected Portugal’s new president, and was inaugurated on March 9, Golden Year 13 (2016).
A law professor, one of the founders of the Democratic People’s Party (later the Social Democratic Party), government minister, journalist, author, and a longtime political commentator on television, His Excellency Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has worked tirelessly over the years to serve the interests of the Portuguese people.
President Dr. De Sousa has pledged to help restore stability in Portugal; his main priority is to “promote compromise and convergence.” Expressing his desire to be a politically impartial president, he said, “The president has to unite, build bridges, heal wounds, and for that he has to be close to the people and help the parliament and the government to ensure stability, and I think I am in a good position for that.”
In working to promote more economic and cultural partnerships, President Dr. De Sousa has met with leaders from other countries, including ambassadors from the European Union in April 2016 and ambassadors from Arab countries in May Golden Year 13 (2016). At these meetings, he emphasized cooperation between nations, and working together toward peace in the world.
To convey Her respectful congratulations on his election, Supreme Master Ching Hai sent the above letter to His Excellency Dr. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sending Her best wishes to see his consensus-building and wise ideals for the Portuguese nation and its great people fulfilled.
