Supreme Master Ching Hai Offers Congratulations to the New President of Iceland

His Excellency Dr. Guðni Jóhannesson was elected Iceland’s new president on June 25, Golden Year 13 (2016).

At 48 years old, His Excellency Dr. Jóhannesson is not only Iceland’s first new president in 20 years, but also the youngest president Iceland has ever elected. He earned a Ph.D. degree in history from the University of London in the United Kingdom. A published author, His Excellency was previously a professor at the University of Iceland, the University of Reykjavik and Bifröst University in Iceland, and the University of London.

Having won the election as an independent candidate, His Excellency emphasized a nonpartisan vision in his leadership role, pledging to work as a mediator to reach understanding, and to act according to the consensus of the people. He said, “I will emphasize the need for compassion, and emphasize how important it is for us as a small nation to stick together.” Moreover, in November 2016, the new president said that he would not accept the recent salary increase of nearly 20 percent per month given by the official Salaries Tribunal; he will donate it to charity instead.
