On January 28, Golden Year 14 (2017), more than one billion people around the globe will be celebrating the beginning of Chinese Lunar New Year of the Rooster. This auspicious holiday is observed in many Asian countries where family members and friends unite and pray for a fulfilling harvest in the new year. More importantly, Chinese New Year’s holiday marks the spirit of saying goodbye to the past and welcoming a wonderful coming year.
The joy of greeting a new year is also celebrated with many traditions. People dress in red – a symbolic color of luck and fortune – and also give money in red envelopes to children and the elderly. In addition, red lanterns are displayed and decorated at home and in the streets. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, vegan dumplings are served on the dinner table for they resemble gold coins in ancient society.
This year of 2017 is also a year of the rooster in Chinese zodiac. Traditionally, the rooster represents the notion of fidelity and punctuality. Roosters are also said to be loyal and observant. In the early days, when farmers needed to get up early for work, the crowing of the rooster was particularly significant to awaken people in the morning. Therefore, the year of the rooster is symbolic of being diligent.
May the year 2017 bring much love, fulfillment and upliftment to all inhabitants on Earth. We pray that humankind will continue to make peace with all beings by quickly adopting a vegan diet.
