Contributing to The Animal Sanctuary UK

By London and Surrey Center, United Kingdom (Originally in English)

On May 18, Golden Year 13 (2016), our London and Surrey, United Kingdom Association members received an email request from Ms. Sara Ross* of The Animal Sanctuary UK appealing for assistance. Ms. Ross wrote, “At present we are in urgent need of help, as we are being forced to move – our current site has been compulsory purchased for a road-widening scheme, and we are not eligible for compensation. The farm we are moving to is derelict, and we need funds to fence the entire site, renovate existing buildings, erect new buildings, clean the site, run electricity and water etc.”

Knowing the urgency of the situation, the next day, our London and Surrey members promptly sent GBP 1,000 from the Center fund to the sanctuary, and also shared the information with all of our Association members in the United Kingdom for further help. Subsequently, we contributed another GBP 5,000 in July to support the sanctuary. Ms. Ross expressed her sincere thanks for our support.

The Animal Sanctuary UK is a safe and loving home for many animals including dogs, cats, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, parrots and horses. Last year, they rescued 384 animals and re-homed 299. If it is not possible to re-home an animal, the sanctuary provides a permanent and loving home for them for life.

The sanctuary also works with children and adults with special needs, including those suffering from stress, depression and/or living with a disability, as a part of “People Helping Animals, Animals Helping People – our together therapy.” They work with up to 70 individuals each week to provide therapeutic experiences that involve spending time with or caring for the animals. In addition, the sanctuary offers groups of local schoolchildren the opportunity to visit the Animal Sanctuary UK, and takes animals into schools so the children can learn how our animal co-inhabitants should be treated. The sanctuary also visits residential homes for the elderly.

We applaud the good work of The Animal Sanctuary UK, and wish the new location will bring them continued success in helping our lovely animal friends.

*In Golden Year 8 (2011), Ms. Sara Ross (Tuppen) and The Horse Refuge, which Ms. Ross founded in 1995, were recognized by Supreme Master Ching Hai with a Shining World Compassion Award and a contribution of US$30,000.
