Veganism Goes Mainstream in South Korea

By Korea News Group (Originally in Korean)

On May 22, Golden Year 13 (2016), over 2,000 enthusiastic visitors attended the very first vegan festival, Vegan Festival Korea, held at the Seoul Innovation Center in the capital city of South Korea. Organized with the help of the innovative fashion brand Vegan Tiger, Vegan Festival Korea was supported by 56 vendors. The lively event offered a comfortable place for people to enjoy plant-based fashion, food and culture, exchange information and make friends.

Our local Association members also joined the event and offered various delicious foods and products including vegan cookies, vegan hamburgers, and vegan alternatives for eggs, meat and cheese. To our great surprise and delight, all the food was sold out before closing time. People appeared to be open to explore the Earth-saving and compassionate vegan lifestyle. All the vendors donated 10% of their proceeds to people and animals in need.

Greatly encouraged by the success of the first festival, the second one was soon held on October 1 in Seoul with even more participating vendors and nearly 4,000 visitors.

Several major vegan companies and restaurants also joined the event, including four Loving Hut franchises managed by our Association members, who brought their special foods including vegan breads, cakes, cookies and ice cream, as well as vegan sausages and hamburgers.

To increase awareness about protecting the environment, this time the festival encouraged visitors to bring their own bowls and cups, and gave cute souvenirs to those who did.

As everyone enjoyed the healthy and tasty vegan fare, many talented musicians took turns to sing songs, which warmed up the atmosphere. Our Korea Association members hope that more successful festivals will be held in the future to lead the plant-based culture and spread veganism in the country.
