ADDIS ABABA (Taiwan News)–Ethiopia is about eight thousand kilometers away from Taiwan. In this country where one can hardly see any Asians, how can there be Taiwanese or Taiwanese cuisine?
The answer is yes and one of them is even a vegan restaurant. This restaurant is located in the capital, Addis Ababa, and is part of a vegan restaurant chain.
Because living conditions are very challenging, it is true that not many Taiwanese are living in Ethiopia. Some Taiwanese go there to work as international volunteers, or to work for short periods of time when they are on an overseas business trip. But to much surprise, the Taiwanese opened a local vegan restaurant. The vegan restaurant opened in Ethiopia by Loving Hut International is inspired by the Supreme Master Ching Hai. Its cuisine is primarily Asian based while incorporating local favorite food “Injara” and other exotic delicacies as well. As a result, their customers reflect a diverse range of people. Not only can the Asians enjoy the flavour of their hometown cooking, but the local people also have a chance to taste Taiwanese cuisine.
You must be wondering where the Taiwanese ingredients and chefs come from!
Manager Zhou says that she goes back to Taiwan every few months and brings back some speciality ingredients. She also teaches the local chefs how to cook Taiwanese style, proving them the opportunity to patiently learn the art.
Zhou is a Hakka from Hsinchu. When talking about her hometown, she becomes emotional and enthusiastically wants to share. “Whenever I see Taiwanese people in Ethiopia, I feel as if I met a member of my family,” she said. The reason why she travelled so far from Taiwan, to Africa to open a vegan restaurant is that she wants to spread love and this “vegan” concept to more places so that everyone will know how healthy and happy being a vegan can be.
