In December 2012, with the memory of Superstorm Sandy still fresh in people’s minds, adverse weather conditions persisted in New York, United States. Many of those affected by Sandy were still cleaning hazardous mold, mud, and debris from their homes and cars while braving falling temperatures and an electrical system that was not yet stable.
Upon receiving a request from Supreme Master Ching Hai to help those affected, with financial assistance available as needed, on December 7 New York members of The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association accompanied Coalition for the Homeless, an advocacy organization serving homeless men, women, and children.
Our Association members formed two teams and followed the Coalition which was traveling in two vans, one going northbound and one going southbound, to help the hardest-to-reach homeless and those in need. With full car loads of winter clothing for 200 homeless individuals, purchased with US$1768 in contributions from our Association members in the US, our teams kept pace with the vans, which each had seven stops along the way.
During the distribution of winter clothing, our team received requests for blankets. Fortunately, The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association’s Boston Center sent a timely contribution of US$1,575 which was sufficient to purchase 200 cozy blankets for the homeless.
We are very thankful to Coalition for the Homeless for their kind help in guiding us to our friends in need. May God bless all those who are vulnerable during the cold weather with much warmth and love.
