A new survey in the border areas of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda showed a 25% increase in the mountain gorilla population since 2010. The survey covered a 2,000-kilometer area of forested terrain. Tracking teams identified 604 gorillas living in 41 social groups. A 2012 census also recorded over 400 gorillas living in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
The two populations, together exceeding 1,000 mountain gorillas, are a result of Government and NGO programs and increased efforts to preserve these majestic beings. Dr. Tara Stoinski, President, and Chief Scientific Officer of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund said, “[The] announcement represents a huge success for conservation… All those working to protect mountain gorillas, the governments of Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo; conservation organizations; and local communities have a lot to be proud of.”
Hearing this good news, Supreme Master Ching Hai contributed US$20,000 on August 24, 2018 to the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund “to further help this laudable good cause with all love and gratitude to all involved’ adding “God bless you.”
Dr. Tara Stoinski expressed deep appreciation for Master’s gift in a letter dated September 4. She wrote,
“Because of your incredible generosity, anti-poaching work continues, research is disseminated, students obtain scientific training, and children in villages around the national park receive conservation education while their parents receive livelihood support.” “Thank you SO much for the generous support – we are incredibly grateful!”
We would like to convey our sincere admiration and respect for all those involved in preserving the lives and habitat of mountain gorillas. May these loving co-inhabitants grace our planet for eons to come.
