On the fifteenth day of the eighth month on the traditional Chinese calendar, the moon rises in its fullest splendor and brightness, bringing families and friends together in merriment and awe. The Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, has been observed for more than three millennia. It is a day for delightful family reunions and savoring delicious vegan mooncakes, but most of all to express gratitude to the moon and the many blessings she has bestowed upon the world.
Indeed, the magnanimous moon, a symbol of peace, family union, summer harvest, and prosperity, has been an inspiration for art, poetry, legends, and stories. Supreme Master Ching Hai also has experienced extraordinary lunar events, such as when the moon miraculously stayed in the same position in the sky for many hours while She was celebrating Moon Festival with resident monks in the mountains in Formosa in 1990. When She and the monks decided to go inside to meditate, the moon went down in an instant. On another wondrous occasion, accompanied by singing and dancing seagulls, the moon greeted Master in Spain with a big smiling face, which continued for many hours as witnessed by Master and Her assistant. Master explained that all the beings on the moon got together to put their smiling image on the moon for Her, for which She expressed Her heartfelt gratitude to them.
We wish our beloved Supreme Master Ching Hai and all beings around the world and on the moon a most joyous Moon Festival. May we forever be filled with wonder, upliftment, and gratitude as the moon continues to shine in Heavenly brilliance and lovingly blesses our world.
