By Philippines Relief Team (Originally in English)
Powerful Typhoon Nock-ten, locally known as Typhoon Nina, swept across the Philippines with winds of up to 235 kilometers per hour on December 25 and 26, 2016. At least seven people lost their lives and more than 340,000 individuals sought shelter in evacuation centers. Ninety-eight percent of those displaced were from the Bicol Region, which is comprised of the provinces of Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon Catanduanes and Masbate. Many travelers were stranded at ports instead of celebrating the holiday. Power supply to millions was disrupted and over 30,000 homes were damaged or destroyed.
Following Supreme Master Ching Hai’s instruction to bring relief to those suffering, a team of our local Association members went to Bicol from January 5 to 7, 2017, to distribute emergency supplies such as rice, oil, sugar and soap, with a US$15,000 fund provided by Master and about US$1,317 contributed by local members.
In addition, we shared vegan cookies with the children. We also gave out copies of Master’s book From Crisis to Peace – The Organic Vegan Way is the Answer and explained to people that devastating disasters can be mitigated or avoided by adopting a compassionate plant-based diet. The recipients were very grateful for the aid.
May Heaven bless and comfort the kind people of the Philippines.
