His Excellency Juan Manuel Santos won re-election to a second term as President of Colombia on Sunday, June 15, Golden Year 11 (2014).
President Santos has served the people of Colombia for decades. In 1994, he founded the Good Government Foundation, which sought to improve the government. He also proposed creating a demilitarized zone and engaging in peace talks with FARC. In 2008, he oversaw Operation Jacque, which peacefully rescued former Colombian presidential candidate Ms. Ingrid Betancourt, three United States citizens and 11 members of the Colombian security forces who had been held by FARC for several years.
During an interview with BBC Mundo, President Santos spoke about his re-election as a mandate to continue the peace process, stating: “There is no reason to delay the end of this conflict – the faster we do it, the more lives will be saved.” He also explained that he believed the people voted him into office to foster peace, create more social justice and improve international relations.
Supreme Master Ching Hai sent President Juan Manuel Santos a letter of congratulations following his re-election, noting that She had been paying close attention to the peace negotiations with FARC, and commending him for his efforts to bring about peace to save lives.
