2016.01.17-Congrats-Letter---Formosan-President-elect

Dr. Tsai Ing-wen made history on Saturday January 16, Golden Year 13 (2016) when she became the first elected female president of Formosa (Taiwan).

Her Excellency obtained a law degree from National Taiwan University and a master’s degree from Cornell University Law School in the United States. She later earned a doctorate degree at the London School of Economics and Political Science in the United Kingdom and eventually became a law professor.

President-elect Dr. Tsai’s legal expertise led to her work as a consultant for negotiations on behalf of Formosa’s entry into the World Trade Organization. She was also an advisor under previous Formosan presidents, focusing on trade and issues pertaining to Formosan-Chinese relations. As the chair of the Mainland Affairs Council, she initiated the “Small Mini Links” program in 2001, which increased trade and transportation with China. She also advocated for allowing Formosan businesses to invest in China.

Her Excellency’s campaign proposals included creating a good economic environment to attract employment opportunities and increased salaries for Formosa’s young people, enhancing government communication and transparency, and increasing cooperation between political parties. She also made a campaign plan to build 200,000 affordable housing units over the next eight years. In addition, President-elect Dr. Tsai has pledged to diversify economic opportunities and personally oversee Formosa’s evolution into becoming an innovation hub for the Asia-Pacific.

Her Excellency also promised to address food safety by increasing funding to train more food safety researchers, encouraging implementation of inspection technologies and improving laws.

One of the most important aspects of her presidency will be the relationship with China. During her victory speech, President-elect Dr. Tsai pledged that she would work to maintain peace and stability with China for the highest good of the Formosan people.

Honoring a long acquaintance with the beautiful island and lovely people of Formosa, Supreme Master Ching Hai sent heartfelt congratulations to President-elect Dr. Tsai Ing-wen on the occasion of her election, applauding the President-elect’s dedication to the welfare of the people and praying for Heaven’s grace to support Her Excellency and her fellow citizens.
