Respectfully Remembering Portugal’s Father of Democracy, His Excellency Mário Soares

Supreme Master Ching Hai sent Her heartfelt condolences to the family of His Excellency Mário Soares, who passed into the light of Heaven on January 7, 2017, at the age of 92. His Excellency Mário Soares was born on December 7, 1924 in Lisbon, Portugal. Having served as both prime minister and president of the nation, he worked tirelessly towards the freedom of the people of Portugal, the European Union and the world at large. He was respectfully regarded as the father of democracy in Portugal and was much loved by the people of the nation.

His Excellency was instrumental in preparing Portugal for joining the European Union in 1986. Stating that he believed in “humanity and its improvement,” he was renowned for being a down-to-earth man who was willing to listen to the people. During one such occasion, there was a question to be resolved regarding a controversial dam that was proposed to be built in the remote north of the country. His Excellency traveled there personally and spoke with all the people involved. He stayed until it was very cold and almost dark to speak with the children from the local school who came to give their views on the dam. He would not leave until every last person who was willing to talk to him had been consulted. The passing of such an extraordinarily humble man, who was a servant of the people of the nation, is a true loss for Portugal and the world.

May the soul of His Excellency Mário Soares rest peacefully in Heaven, and may his legacy be remembered as a guiding light for future generations. We thank His Excellency for all he has done for the betterment of humanity. Above is Supreme Master Ching Hai’s letter to his family.
