In early October 2016, Typhoon Chaba slammed across the southern part of South Korea, causing tremendous damage. Ulsan City was among the areas experiencing the worst aftermath, where Taehwa River caused unexpected, record-breaking flooding. Following Supreme Master Ching Hai’s loving instruction to always help people in need, our local Association members quickly formed relief teams, and rushed to the affected area to provide assistance.
On October 7, one of our relief teams went to Taehwa River Park. The park used to be very beautiful with many bamboo trees, but sadly all was swept away by the flood. Our team put all their effort and their hearts into cleaning up the area so that the bamboo forest can regain its previous beauty. Our other team went to a shop in Taehwa Market where all the goods were flooded, and the owner was at a loss as to what to do. Our team lovingly and thoroughly cleaned up the shop.
Upon the recommendation of Ulsan City’s disaster relief headquarters, on the morning of October 8, about 25 of our Association members headed to a public bath that was seriously damaged in Taehwa Market. On the way, our team was touched to see many military personnel and volunteers from various organizations working hard. Not caring about the mud and dirt, everyone devoted the next few hours to cleaning up the boiler room in the basement. The owner of the facility came to thank those helping, saying, “Thank you so much for coming from far away. This became much cleaner than my expectation. Thank you so much.” After dinner, despite being very tired, our team continued to clean up the yard of the home of an Association member well into the late evening. All felt happy and uplifted for having the chance to help others.
On October 9, after doing more cleaning in the public bath, our relief team set up a tent to offer vegan noodles and warm tea to the local people and volunteers. We also distributed Master’s Alternative Living flyers, The Key of Immediate Enlightenment Sample Booklets, flyers about veganism and climate change, and soy meat samples. In addition, to bring Master’s light and blessing to the area, we arranged an exhibition of S.M. Celestial Clothes and Master’s publications, and also drove a truck with a big TV near Taehwa River, playing Master’s lectures on climate change and the musical Loving the Silent Tears.
All our relief work was accomplished thanks to Master’s wonderful arrangement, and the joint dedicated efforts of our Association members from all corners of South Korea. We are deeply grateful to Master for giving us this opportunity to share love with the people of our country.
