Love In Action

Master is always deeply concerned when disasters occur in any part of the world. Upon hearing news of such events, She immediately provides financial assistance and sends relief teams. Through such efforts, Her unconditional love and support are conveyed to those affected, thus reducing their suffering while helping them to rebuild their lives.

In recognition of the selfless actions of governments, organizations and relief workers around the globe, Master expresses Her gratitude as follows: "Thank you, all the international help that brings care and necessities to afflicted victims. Thank you all the relief workers for taking time and forsaking your own comfort, even traveling great distance on unfavorable roads and conditions to bring love and assistance to people in a time of need. May Heaven bless you abundantly for your generosity and noble sacrifice."

Providing Vegan Food, Warm Clothing and Supplies to the Refugees in Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Italy

By Loving Hut on Lake Klopein, Austria Relief Team (Originally in English)

In response to Supreme Master Ching Hai’s loving instruction and Her continuous care for refugees, the working crew from Loving Hut on Lake Klopein in Austria formed a relief team to assist. In November 2015, we traveled to Croatia and to the areas it shares borders with Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia. We also went to Serbia near the Macedonia border, and to Greece and Italy. Relief items purchased from November 12 to December 17, 2015 were purchased with EUR 17,393.32 from Master’s fund and EUR 2,874.86 from our Formosa Centers.

Providing Warm Clothing to Slavonski Brod Refugee Camp in Croatia – November 12, 2015

On November 12, 2015, together with a Croatian Association member, we visited the main camp near the town of Slavonski Brod, on the border of Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina, where about 3,000 to 4,000 refugees are staying. After learning from the main coordinator of the Red Cross in the camp that they needed supplies, we went straight to Slavonski Brod and purchased warm clothing, such as hats, gloves, socks and shoes, from a local shop.

The owner of the shop kindly helped us deliver all the items to the camp. The person in charge of the camp thanked us for our contribution and told us that they will continue to need more warm shoes for men and women in the coming weeks. We will keep in contact with him and provide further support soon.

Bringing Food to Refugees on the Croatia/Slovenia Border – November 13, 2015

On November 13, 2015, our relief team learned from a volunteer group based in Zagreb, Croatia, with a Facebook page “Are You Syrious,” that 10 buses of refugees had arrived at the border with Bistrica Ob Sotli, Slovenia, where they would wait for two hours before being transported elsewhere. Therefore, we brought vegan food including fruit, bread, chocolate, cookies, water and juice to the border and distributed them to the people waiting outside. The Red Cross volunteers thanked us for bringing extra supplies as their storage was running low.

Based on the suggestion of the volunteers, we purchased baby food, and other vegan food and water, and gave more to the refugees who were getting on buses to continue their journey. We left the remaining supplies in the storage room there for the people who would come later. We were touched to see the Red Cross volunteers were working long hours, sometimes resting only two hours at night, and plan to bring more supplies to the refugees at the border to support their work.

More Vegan Food and Supplies for Arriving Refugees Near the Croatia Borders – November 14 to 15, 2015

On November 14, our relief team drove two cars loaded with fruit, candy, juice, snacks and water supplies purchased with Master’s fund of EUR 1,892 for the refugees and brought them to Dobovec, Slovenia on the border of Croatia, where five buses carrying a total 250 people were due to arrive a few hours later. The volunteers there accepted some of our vegan food supplies at the border and asked us to deliver the rest to their warehouse in the nearby town. They told us that their supplies combined with ours would be enough for more than one week at the rate the refugees are coming through now.

As all refugees arriving in Croatia are brought to the Slavonski Brod camp at the border of Croatia and Bosnia Herzegovina, we delivered more hats, scarves, gloves, pants and shoes purchased with EUR 1,614 contributed by Master, on November 15. Clothing was taken to the warehouse area of the Red Cross in the camp based on their request. The Red Cross’s main coordinator gave us a brief tour of the camp and told us that about 5,000 to 10,000 people pass through every day. They are registered and are provided with warm clothes, food and water. After staying at the camp for a few hours, they are transported by train or bus to Slovenia. The large tents in the camp are fitted with large blower heaters, toilets and shower rooms. Medical services and psychological counseling are also provided. We are grateful for the dedication of the Red Cross staff and will keep supporting their work in the future.

Continued Relief Efforts on the Border of Slovenia and Macedonia – – November 18 to 19, 2015

Based on the research and recommendations from the local volunteer groups, our Loving Hut Austria relief team decided to leave Zagreb, Croatia and go further south towards southern Serbia where help is required more urgently. On November 18, 2015, we arrived at Preševo, a town bordering Macedonia, and met with Mr. Xhelal Hasani, the Administrative Manager at the Center of Solidarity and Advancement, whose organization is helping refugees in Serbia. Mr. Hasani explained his team has set up a location in the town of Miratovac on the Serbian side of the border to distribute food, water, and warm clothes to refugees coming from Tabanovce in Macedonia.

At his suggestion, we brought fruit, bread, cookies and water to Tabanovce camp in Macedonia on November 19, which were distributed to many refugees. We also applied to the local government office for permission to bring supplies in the future. Next, we returned to Serbia and purchased more shoes, warm clothes, socks, gloves and hats, and brought them to Miratovac. The volunteers there were very happy to receive them. We helped distribute the clothing to the refugees passing through.

Bringing Supplies to Tabanovce and Idomeni Transit Camps on the Borders of Macedonia and Greece – November 20 to 21, 2015

On November 20, seeing more supplies were needed at the Tabanovce camp on the northern border of Macedonia, we purchased vegan food, water and warm clothing and brought them to the distribution tents for the refugees. The boxes of bananas and oranges were especially welcomed. A volunteer from Cooperative Baptist Fellowship thanked us, as an estimated 5,000 refugees are passing through every day in need of warm clothing for the coming winter. He requested we bring more similar supplies as they are very much appreciated by the refugees. Therefore, on November 22, we returned with more fruit, water and warm clothing, and helped the volunteers distribute supplies to the 600 to 1,000 new arrivals coming by train. We also distributed Alternative Living flyers, designed by Supreme Master Ching Hai to provide information on the many benefits of transitioning to a vegan diet.

On November 21, we learned that the Idomeni camp in Greece near the border of Macedonia had the largest number of refugees needing assistance. Immediately, we started driving south towards Idomeni after purchasing more water, fruit and warm clothing. On the way, we gave some supplies to a small group of refugees walking towards the camp. All the remaining supplies were quickly distributed as soon as we arrived at the camp.

Heading back to Austria, we feel deeply grateful to Master for these opportunities to bring Her love and blessing to the refugees. We thank all the beautiful people we have met during the last two weeks, both the refugees and the dedicated volunteers. We pray that all the refugees will soon find permanent homes and comfort in their new communities.

Providing Aid in Trieste, Italy – November 23 to 24, 2015

On November 23, our Loving Hut Austria relief team learned that there was a group of asylum seekers who needed help in Trieste, a city in northeastern Italy near Slovenia. The group came to Trieste by foot, mainly from Afghanistan and Pakistan. As the local asylum seeker camps are full, they stay in a warehouse by the train station in the city while waiting for their applications to be processed, which could take up to a year.

Therefore, on our way back from to Austria from Greece, in Croatia we bought the requested supplies including shoes, socks, hats, scarves, gloves, underwear, shavers, body wash, shampoo, backpacks and flashlights. On November 24, some members of an NGO of Italy’s Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, called Refugees Welcome to Italy FVG, helped us to enter the area in Trieste and distribute the supplies. It is getting very cold at night in Trieste recently, so the asylum seekers thanked us very much for the warm clothing.

Assisting Refugees in Idomeni, Greece – December 2 to 3, 2015

As several Balkan countries closed their borders on November 19 to all refugees other than those from Syrian, Afghanistan and Iraq, thousands of refugees were stranded on remote frontiers with inadequate facilities.

In Idomeni, Greece, which is near the Macedonian border, about 3,000 refugees were staying with 300 to 400 daily new arrivals. As only a limited amount of food was given out every day, the refugees were in a state of hunger. Upon learning their urgent need, our Loving Hut Austria relief team immediately purchased the required food items such as fruits, bottled water, cookies, peanuts, energy bars and popcorn with Master’s fund, and arrived at the camp on December 2. People were very appreciative to receive our packed vegan food and water as well as Master’s words of comfort printed on a flyer in both English and Arabic.

The next day, the situation in the Idomeni camp deteriorated due to the desperate circumstances. The NGOs had to evacuate for safety reasons, so as a result, there was no supply of food and water anymore. We distributed more vegan food to the refugees outside of the camp. Some of them were leaving the camp to go by foot to Serbia, while the newcomers were at a loss about what to do. We carried the rest of the food to the women and children in the nearby fields.

Though we were not able to distribute the clothing items due to the difficult situation, we brought them to the nearby Tabanovce transit camp on the northern border of Macedonia. Mr. Hajnilla Sadiku, a coordinator at the camp, was very happy to receive the warm winter jackets, hats, gloves, shawls, shoes and socks we brought. He told us for now they have enough warm clothing for the coming refugees.

Our Greece Relief Team Joins Our Loving Hut Austria Team to Help Refugees in Idomeni, Greece – December 2 to 4, 2015

On December 2, our Greece relief team left the island of Lesbos and traveled north to join our Loving Hut Austria team in Idomeni, where our purchased 3,000 sleeping bags and 4,000 rain ponchos will be arriving. Two days later, all the items were delivered safely, thanks to the help from volunteers from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) (Doctors Without Borders), and the truck driver, who bravely guarded the truck full of sleeping bags for two nights. May the supplies serve the refugees well for the upcoming winter and the journey ahead.

We also distributed some vegan food outside of the Idomeni camp, where the tension was very high. No food had been distributed for two days in the camp. According to Greek authorities, one refugee died near the Macedonian border after climbing on the carriage of a train and touching an electric cable. Our deep condolences to the loved ones of the deceased man, and our heartfelt prayers for all the refugees, that the situation will improve soon with the collaboration of all the countries.

Bringing Vegan Food to Refugees in Idomeni Camp, Greece – December 4, 2015

On December 4, 2015, upon hearing the tragic events and the suffering of the refugees in the Idomeni camp in Greece, Supreme Master Ching Hai cried in deep sadness. She encouraged us to continue our efforts to help the desperate people and provide them with spiritual sustenance as well. Master said when we care and comfort the refugees in their time of dire distress, they would in turn feel loved and feel calm, the situation will not aggravate itself, and as a result the atmosphere of the planet would be more peaceful.

Our Loving Hut Austria relief team was able to prepare vegan food packages containing water, fruits, bread and biscuits, enough for 2,000 people, in a short time. Our sincere thanks to all the shops for their kind help and the generous discounts. We drove back to the Idomeni camp to continue our support for the refugees.

Due to the unrest at the camp the day before, there were many police at the site to keep the situation in order. To complete the distribution effectively, we worked with various NGOs. For example, Ms. Fotini Kelektsoglou, a social worker from the Greece-based PRAKSIS (Programs of Development, Social Support and Medical Cooperation), organized a tent for our distribution. A21, an international organization devoted to ending human trafficking, helped us manage the distribution. In addition, three refugees stepped up to assist us in making sure the queue was peaceful. We also shared the flyers printed with Master’s comforting words in English and Arabic and we saw many of refugees taking time to read them. The people receiving the food and water were very happy and grateful. It was so heartwarming to see their cheerful faces. After the distribution, we thanked all the NGOs and all others who had helped us tirelessly.

Though Master is very busy, She still frequently calls to find out about the refugees situation. She continuously encourages us to care and comfort the refugees. By doing so our compassion grows and we become more peaceful with each other.

Continued Refugee Relief Efforts in Greece – December 4 to 6, 2015

Although the border between Macedonia and Greece was re-opened on December 4 after being closed for two days, allowing refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan to go through, thousands more from other countries are stuck at the Idomeni border. Due to the unrest in the camp, the facilities have been damaged and most of the NGOs have left. With all the newcomers, the camp is extending to the nearby fields. A lot of people are sleeping outdoors with no blankets or food.

Our Loving Hut Austria relief team purchased vegan food and water and distributed them on the night of December 4 with the NGO Save the Children. The next day, we talked to a few refugees to find out the situation and to share with them Master’s teachings.

A family of five from Syria was delighted to receive Master’s flyers, and vegan chocolates. Despite his own hardship, Talal, the head of the family, was very generous. He gave his only sleeping bag to a woman who was very cold and shared his only bottle of water with other thirsty people.

A hotel manager, Konstantinos, read the Greek version of Master’s The Key of Immediate Enlightenment Sample Booklet and was grateful to be reminded of the benefit of the vegan diet and would like to try it again. He is very interested in Master’s teachings and said he would share Master’s booklet with his son.

Aslam, a refugee from Syria, has been spending his time coordinating with different groups and individuals to help his fellow refugees since he landed in Greece in September. He told us the situation is improving here, despite the appearances of troubles. There is food being provided for most refugees and in the three warehouses there are plenty of tents and sleeping bags that need distributing. There is also now a safe place for migrants and refugees in a former orphanage in Thessaloniki.

On December 6, we went to Idomeni camp to assess the situation. We were pleased to see there are over 10 large tents, which are heated and have proper floors. Everyone seemed to have sleeping bags and blankets. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) (Doctors Without Borders) has set up four new tents and the UN has provided washing facilities and toilets. Some people were gathering at the new free charging station to recharge their mobile phones. The police told us the border was mostly peaceful now and the situation was under control. The volunteers are running three kitchens to provide drinks, snacks and daily meals for over 3,000 people. We hand out flyers containing comforting words from Master in Arabic and English, whenever we can.

P.S. December 5 is the International Volunteer Day. We would like to thank all the volunteers who have been working day and night to help the refugees, especially the ones from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) (Doctors Without Borders) who have been lovingly taking care of the sick and the weak. They are the manifestation of God’s love.

Providing More Vegan Food for Refugees in Idomeni Camp in Greece – December 7, 2015

On December 7, knowing that more food was still needed at Idomeni camp in Greece, our Loving Hut Austria relief team returned with packaged bottled water, bananas, apples, oranges, energy bars, cookies, peanuts and popcorn.

The atmosphere was calm and things seemed to be quite stable at the camp. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees), the number of the refugees at the camp has reduced to approximately 2,000 to 2,500. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) (Doctors Without Borders) had set up several large tents to provide extra shelter for the smaller tents in the freezing weather. Many people were sitting by bonfires to warm themselves.

As soon as we brought the vegan food to the distribution tent, a long queue was quickly formed. Many expressed gratefulness for receiving Master’s gifts. Some said, “Thank you for the happiness.” A few holding the flyer with Master’s comforting words in Arabic and English, said, “Master Ching Hai, Master Ching Hai.”

One man was almost brought to tears. Many wanted to know about our Association and were very surprised to hear that we traveled from many different countries to support them. We thanked many volunteers who kindly assisted us during the food distribution to ensure that everything went smoothly.

We left the camp with a content and appreciative heart. Seeing the happy and cheerful smiles on the faces of the people who had gone through so much hardship really made us deeply grateful to Master for the opportunity to help them.

Greece Relief Team Assists Refugees in Idomeni Camp – December 7 and 8, 2015

Our Greece relief team also visited Idomeni camp, and on December 7, helped distribute socks and gloves to the refugees. We also cleaned up the area around the warehouse that was storing the relief supplies.

The next morning, on December 8, we returned to the camp, and seeing a long queue was formed for breakfast in camp A, we helped the volunteers from the local NGO, PRAKSIS (Programs of Development, Social Support and Medical Cooperation), to hand out fruits, as well as share our smiles and love.

A man from Senegal told us he is praying to God continuously for a peaceful solution for all the refugees and the world’s problems, so we gave him a flyer with Master’s words of comfort.

Later in the day, we bought many gloves, hats and socks from a shopkeeper who was very sympathetic to the refugees, and he gave us a generous discount. Back at the camp, we distributed children’s items along with some vegan chocolates, which delighted a lot of the little angels. Then we went to the warehouse to pick up more sleeping bags, which were distributed together with more gloves, around the camp that night.

As the temperature dropped to freezing on the last day of our stay at Idomeni, we gave out hats, gloves and socks to the refugees who will continue to journey northward. Seeing a little girl shivering in the cold, we immediately put a hat over her head and gloves on her hands to keep her warm. We also handed out vegan chocolates to give the travelers extra energy. We noticed the situation at the border has improved a great deal from a week ago, thanks to the authorities who have directed the refugees and organized their transportation.

We are very grateful to all the volunteers and the police for their dedication and organization which make it possible to safely serve so many people. Most refugees are still smiling and are so thankful for what they have received. It is truly an honor to be part of this global humanitarian effort and practice love in action. We join Master in Her prayer, “May Peace be here!!”

Bringing Warm Clothing and Food to Refugees at Kavala Harbor, Greece – December 9, 2015

Twice a week, thousands of refugees from Greece’s Lesbos island arrive by ferry to the port of Kavala in northern mainland Greece. Local volunteers, NGOs and charities are set up at the port to greet the arriving refugees with lovingly prepared gifts, food, warm clothing and other necessities. The Red Cross and a doctor are also on site in case medical assistance is needed for the refugees before their continued journeys. Those from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan continue to Idomeni, while others continue to Athens.

Upon learning that warm clothing and food were needed by the new arrivals, on December 9, our Loving Hut Austria relief team and Greece relief team worked together and brought supplies to the port, which included jackets, gloves, shawls, hats, baby pouches, thermal undergarments, socks, bottled water, bananas, energy bars, cookies, groundnuts and popcorn.

At the port, we met with the coordinators who were eager to learn about our Association, and Ms. Michailidou, who showed us where to unload our supplies.

At 7 pm, as a ferry arrived bringing about 1,300 refugees, we started distributing the warm clothing and vegan food packages. Local students were also distributing collected contributions from their high school. The refugees were so grateful that they kept giving repeated thanks. Many of our members carried the food packages and handed them to the refugees who were walking towards the buses to go to the next destinations. Our deep gratitude to Master for Her blessing, and our thanks to all the volunteers and individuals who helped us this day and continue to lovingly greet the refugees upon arrival.

Returning to Idomeni Camp in Greece – December 11, 2015

On December 11, just as we were about to leave for Athens, our Loving Hut Austria relief team was informed by PRAKSIS (Programs of Development, Social Support and Medical Cooperation) that there was a shortage of food at Idomeni camp, so we traveled back to the camp with prepared vegan food packages for distribution.

The refugees were mostly from Syria, Afghanistan or Iraq, and they told us that they were happy to arrive in a safe place and were looking forward to living in the countries of which they dream. Many local Greek people also came and brought lots of food and warm clothing for the refugees, a true example of loving thy neighbor.

Assisting Refugees in Athens, Greece – December 14 to 15, 2015

Our Loving Hut Austria team traveled to Athens to continue relief work. On both the morning and the evening of December 14, we distributed vegan food packages containing fruit, water, nuts and biscuits as well as Master’s flyer entitled, “Those Who Have Love Are Nearest to God” in both English and Arabic to the refugees temporarily staying at Victoria Square in Athens. They will either be transported to another refugee camp soon or will wait until their papers are sorted. All were very grateful for our packages and the kind support.

The next day, we headed to the port of Piraeus for more food distribution upon learning from a local humanitarian group, Pamberaeki Support Initiative for Refugees and Immigrants (PSIRI) that a passenger ship would arrive with more than a thousand refugees. PSIRI has a building assigned by the port authorities where they provide travel information, first aid and medicines, dry food, personal hygiene items, clothes, shoes, mobile charging stations and shower facilities for the refugees. The volunteers from PSIRI welcomed our support and will keep us updated regarding the arrival of the next ship.

Refugee Relief Efforts Recognized by Proini News of Greece

By News Team (Originally in English)

On Friday, December 11, 2015 a local Greece media outlet Proini News published an article with an acknowledgment of groups and organizations involved in refugee relief efforts. The article, “Two Palestinians Ride Free to Thessaloniki,” (See translated article below; originally in Greek) reports of the situation of 1,000 refugees who arrived at the port of Kavala on Wednesday, December 9. The article details how local authorities facilitated the travels of each refugee, and then mentions the humanitarian aid given upon arrival by volunteering students and the Loving Hut Austria relief team of The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association.

Our sincere appreciation to Proini News and all media outlets that are keeping the world informed about the situation of the refugees so that global citizens may know where help is most urgently needed.

Our Association members are forever grateful to Supreme Master Ching Hai for giving us the opportunity and means to express true love in action by serving our friends, the refugees, in their time of need.

Two Palestinians Ride Free to Thessaloniki

    (Originally in Greek)

    December 11, 2015, 7:51 a.m.

About 1,000 refugees came to the port of Kavala on Wednesday afternoon from the ship Island Mykonos. The scenes that unfolded at the harbor are now a common occurrence. We refer to the Greek police checking passports and documentation of the refugees as they board the bus to continue their journey.

At the entrance of each bus, a policeman stands checking the documentation of every refugee. Only refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria are allowed travel to Idomeni. The same checks also occurred at the port from which the refugees departed.

For example, on Wednesday about 1,000 refugees were checked. Only two were found to be from Palestine. They were escorted by the police patrol to the Kavala bus station and traveled free on the bus to Thessaloniki, because they will not be allowed to enter Skopje [in Macedonia] even if they do make it to Idomeni.

The Kavala traffic police were present and helped facilitate the departure of about 20 tourist coaches that evening from the main port.

Meanwhile, humanitarian assistance is offered with the arrival of each vessel by the usual organizations, sometimes they are the established well-known organizations and sometimes they are new.

On Wednesday, there were secondary high school students at the port, as well as a humanitarian organization from Austria. The name of the organization is “The Supreme Master Ching Hai.” The ladies came to Kavala from Skopje with plenty of food, and in cooperation with local associations, distributed the food to refugees.

Visiting Katalipsi Camp in Athens, Greece – December 16, 2015

On the morning of December 16, our Loving Hut Austria relief team visited Katalipsi camp operated at an abandoned public building in Athens. The camp is managed by a group of volunteers of various nationalities including Greek, Iranian and Afghan, who can communicate with the refugees in their native tongues. As the camp is well stocked with all the basic necessities such as warm clothing, hygiene supplies, dry foods and more, we brought some fresh fruit and water, as well as “Those Who Have Love Are Nearest to God” flyers containing Master’s comforting words in Arabic and English.

It was heartwarming to see many smiling faces in this temporary safe haven with children playing happily and young mothers selecting clothes for their family.

We spoke with a remarkable 20-year-old volunteer named Reza, who came from Iran to Greece three years ago as a refugee and now lives in Athens as a translator.  Reza spends much of his time at Katalipsi helping the refugees. He told us about the dedication of all the volunteers at the camp towards helping refugees, saying, “All these things that we do comes from deep within our hearts.”

Providing Vegan Food to Refugees in Port of Piraeus and Central Athens, Greece – December 17, 2015

We received a notice from Pamberaeki Support Initiative for Refugees and Immigrants (PSIRI) that a passenger ship carrying a few hundred refugees would be arriving at the port of Piraeus in the morning of December 17. Our Loving Hut Austria team jumped in the van loaded with approximately 1,000 vegan food parcels prepared the previous night, which contained “Those Who Have Love Are Nearest to God” flyers expressing Master’s comforting words in Arabic and English. With help from the PSIRI volunteers, we distributed the items to the refugees coming from the ship. Many of them were happy to have reached Athens and to receive some nourishment and words of welcome.

Later we traveled to a day center operated by Programs of Development, Social Support and Medical Cooperation (PRAKSIS), for asylum seekers and homeless individuals, and distributed water bottles, cookies and a few vegan food parcels. The day center is in central Athens close to Omonoia Square where many refugees go when they are in transit to travel out of Athens or when they have no other place to go.

As we prepare to head back to Austria tomorrow, our deep gratitude to Master for the opportunity to assist our brothers and sisters in need. We pray that with God’s grace, all the refugees will find happy homes in their desired countries and the world will become peaceful soon.
