Record low temperatures in northern India had led to extremely cold weather conditions for almost three months from December 2015 to February 2016, which mostly affected the states of Punjab and Rajasthan. More than 10,000 people who lived on the streets were suffering in the cold with inadequate clothing and not enough food. A healthcare unit of the state government and many local NGOs tried their best to provide the basic requirements for the disadvantaged individuals.
Deeply concerned about the affected people, Supreme Master Ching Hai offered a generous fund of US$12,000 (INR 812,070) on January 27, 2016, and asked our local Association members to render aid. With Master’s blessings, during January and February of 2016, we were able to give blankets, sweaters and nutritious vegan food to approximately 5,000 people in Phillaur, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Moga, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali), Chandigarh and Faridkot districts of Punjab, as well as a few small towns in and around Jodhpur of Rajasthan. We took the opportunity to talk to the people about Master, and share the benefits of the plant-based diet. We encouraged everyone to have more vegan meals on a regular basis, and most of them willingly agreed.
