Sahnaya is a small town in southern Syria, about 15 kilometers south of Damascus. During the Syrian crisis, Sahnaya graciously welcomed 13,350 families from nearby areas who were displaced by war. Many of these families currently live in unfinished buildings after obtaining approval from the owners to stay there; others live on farms and in rented houses.
The refugees are provided with shelter, food, healthcare and clothing by various charitable organizations such as the Red Crescent. More assistance was needed to supply drinking water. Thus, our Association members from the United Kingdom Center contributed US$3,000 to provide water for 350 families. From May to July 2016, these funds have been used to purchase 200 barrels of water per day. In addition, US$158.70 was used to obtain a license to dig two wells in the Zeitoun area of Sahnaya. Although no water has been found so far, additional wells will be dug at a new site. More wells are also being dug through the help of other volunteer organizations.
Some of the landowners in Sahnaya have also approved a project to allow displaced families to cultivate their land, which will provide work for hundreds of people and transform the region into an agricultural area.
We, the fellow Association members in Syria, are deeply grateful to Supreme Master Ching Hai for Her compassion and love for the Syrian refugees and displaced people. May our country soon be at peace.
