By Indonesia Relief Team (Originally in Indonesian)
On December 12, 2014, a landslide struck in and around Sampang Village in the Banjarnegara Regency of Central Java, Indonesia, burying at least 105 houses. Deemed to be the region’s second-worst disaster on record, approximately 2,000 people were evacuated to local emergency shelters, while the death toll reached 95 by the last day of evacuation, with another 13 victims still missing.
On December 15, following Supreme Master Ching Hai’s instruction to always help those in need, our Association members from Jakarta, Bali and Yogyakarta obtained information from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and the local Red Cross. We then formed a relief team with our Central Java Association members to extend Master’s love to those affected.
Using IDR 20,203,935 (US$1,612) contributed by our Indonesian Association members, our team worked overnight to prepare more than a hundred relief packages containing daily necessities such as food, medicine and hygiene items for adults and babies.
Early the next morning, in coordination with the local Red Cross, we went to evacuation centers in Banjarnegara and distributed the packages to people affected by the landslide.
Then, on December 17, we traveled to Karangkobar Village in Banjarnegara and provided medical care for two children at the local Puskesmas (Community Health Center).
Next, our team traveled on dangerous roads to the hamlet of Slimpet in Telaga Village in the Punggelan District of Banjarnegara, where another landslide had recently occurred, and treated 78 adults and 23 children with assistance from the local people, the Red Cross and the Puskesmas (Community Health Center). We also distributed relief packages for babies as well as sanitary packages.
Our relief team members are deeply grateful for Master’s grace and compassion during the humanitarian mission in response to the Banjarnegara landslide. We pray that all those affected will be comforted by God’s love and soon be able to resume their normal lives.
