In December 2014, a Syrian refugee family with a father, mother and three children fled from Egypt to Gaza, hoping to find refuge and a fresh start. Fortunately, they were discovered by one of our Association members in Gaza who offered to let them live with him in his house. The father of this Association member also provided the Syrian family with some land to cultivate and grow their own food. Our Association member’s father is a local farmer and a vegan, who follows the teachings of Supreme Master Ching Hai. He has 50 other farmer friends who also do the same.
The climate in this area is very dry, and the soil requires constant irrigation for crops to grow. Sadly, the local farmers’ well was destroyed during the last conflict between Hamas and Israel in 2016. Like the other farmers who could no longer irrigate their land, the Syrian family was worried about their crops and their food supply.
On February 20, 2017, our Association members from Singapore provided financial support so the local well could be rebuilt, and to purchase a well water pump. The farmers can now irrigate their crops, and the well also provides drinking water for the Syrian refugee family as well as three more Syrian refugee families, including single mothers with children, who have now moved to the kind Palestinian farmer’s land. On February 25, we delivered basic food necessities including wheat flour, lentils, rice, beans and vegetable oil to the families.
In March 2017, 10 more Syrian refugee families (a total of 46 people including children) moved to the farmland. The local farmers set up tents and accommodations for the new families who agreed to help on the farm, as more land needs to be cultivated. Also, a Palestinian furniture store donated many new mattresses for the Syrian families. At the local mosque, the Palestinian farmers prayed together with the Syrian families expressing gratitude to Allah for His grace and blessings.
Our deep gratitude also for Allah’s grace and blessings in providing the Syrian refugees a new home in Gaza. And our heartfelt appreciation to all the Palestinian farmers and the local people involved in welcoming and offering aid and assistance to the Syrian families. We pray that these families and all refugees will have a bright, prosperous and peaceful future.
