In Jakarta, near the United Nations Refugee Agency office in Kebon Sirih, many hundreds of refugees, including children, lived on the street hoping for some support and accommodation. In July, 2019, the Jakarta Administration Office humanely decided to help, and relocated the refugees to a temporary shelter in a former building of the West Jakarta Military Command.
The refugees, who had escaped armed conflict in their home countries of Afghanistan, Somalia, Sudan, Pakistan, Ethiopia, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Yemen were relieved to finally have a roof over their heads.
Currently, there are 1,165 refugees including 298 children below five years of age temporarily accommodated in the building. Their basic needs are provided by the Jakarta Administration Office and contributions from private companies or local people living throughout the neighbourhood.
Our Association members from Jakarta Center visited the shelters on August 10, 2019, to comfort the children by distributing 298 children packs consisting of diapers, baby powder, baby soap and shampoo, eucalyptus oil, socks, vegan food and candy. All the parents and children were so happy to receive the gifts.
We pray that they will soon find their home in a peaceful country and live safe, contented lives, in God’s merciful love.
