By Formosa Relief Team (Originally in Chinese)
Reduced to an upper moderate typhoon when approaching Formosa, Super Typhoon Soudelor landed on Sioulin Town in Hualien County on August 8, 2015, causing power outages in 4.85 million households as well as serious flooding, landslides and flash floods. The typhoon claimed eight lives, caused 420 injuries, and left four people missing.
The village of the Luofu Heliu Tribe of Fuxing District, located in the mountains of Taoyuan City, was buried by landslides, becoming one of the hardest-hit areas. All transportation and supplies of food, water and electricity were interrupted. Fortunately, there were no casualties as the tribe had been evacuated. However, more than a dozen homes were destroyed, driving the residents to shelters.
On August 11, our Association members from the districts of Daxi, Longtan and Fuxing of Taoyuan City organized a rescue team and set out to assess the disaster situation. We contacted the local village chiefs and social welfare organizers to understand the situation of the affected households and the needs of the victims. We also sent members to the shelter at Luofu Elementary School to find out the exact needs of the people there. On August 12, we quickly purchased 42 sets of mattresses and cotton quilts and delivered them to the shelter. Each affected individual received a mattress and a cotton quilt.
We hope that warm caring hearts will help comfort all those affected by the typhoon. We are very grateful for Master’s blessings, which allowed the relief work to be completed successfully.
