By Slovenia Relief Team (Originally in Slovenian)
During the fall and winter of 2015, hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria and the Middle East flooded the small country of Slovenia, desperately trying to escape the war. They usually stayed in Slovenia for a couple of days before heading north to Austria, Germany or Scandinavian countries as their final destination. Following Supreme Master Ching Hai’s loving instructions to help the refugees in need, several of our Association members from Slovenia formed a relief team.
From mid- to late October, our team distributed several thousand cereal bars and other vegan food items, along with EUR 1,500 supplied by our local team members and some of our Association Centers from around the world. This quick assistance was especially invaluable in those early days before the authorities successfully coordinated the relief efforts. We were glad to see that the government authorities, including the police and army, as well as NGOs, upgraded the facilities in the largest refugee center at the border of Šentilj, Slovenia and Spielfeld, Austria to house up to 15,000 refugees, providing them with good access to food, warm shelter and medical aid.
In December, with EUR 1,000 contributed by Supreme Master Ching Hai, we joined our Berlin Association members and volunteers from the Sant Mat Spiritual Group from Maribor, Slovenia and provided holiday gifts to small children at the refugee center. Together we packed and arranged about 1,500 cute, small vegan gift packs, each including cereal bars, candy, chocolates, peanuts, potato chips and Neapolitan wafers. We also included uplifting, loving notes to let the little angels know they were not alone and had not been forgotten.
Our deep gratitude to our beloved Master for Her shining example and inspiration. Also, our heartfelt appreciation for the enthusiastic and invaluable support from all who assisted during the relief effort.
