Following heavy rains, on October 1, 2015, the village of El Cambray Dos, located at the foot of steep hills in Santa Catarina Pinula, Guatemala, was leveled by one of the most serious landslides in recent years. More than 280 lives were lost, and approximately 125 homes were damaged or destroyed. Local authorities set up shelters for displaced citizens, and people from other parts of Guatemala donated clothes and food. The Cuban and the United States governments also offered humanitarian aid. Deeply concerned for the victims, Supreme Master Ching Hai lovingly contributed US$11,000 on October 8 to assist the Guatemalan Red Cross in carrying out landslide relief in Guatemala.
We pray that devastating natural disasters such as this one cease as more people halt climate change by adopting the Earth-protecting and planet-sustaining vegan diet.
