Award-winning system provides convenient clean energy in Kenyan homes

Azuri Technologies’s Indigo program is enabling residents of Kitale, Kenya to reduce weekly energy expenditures by 50 percent or more. Instead of using kerosene lamps to light their living spaces, people who live off the power grid now have the option of purchasing this healthier, affordable, eco-friendly, fume-free, solar alternative.

With a start-up cost of about US$12, a buyer receives a solar kit that will provide eight hours of lighting for two rooms each night and consists of a three-watt solar panel, a battery, two LED lamps, and a phone charging unit.

The United Kingdom-based company, Azuri Technologies, develops and manufactures this inventive program called Indigo.

Following the initial price, inexpensive scratch cards can be bought for about US$1.40 per week. The cards contain codes, which allow mobile phone user to record the purchase and add more time to Indigo. Using this pay-as-you-go plan enables the starter system to be fully-owned by the customer within 80 weeks, at which time they can choose to upgrade to a larger one and continue to use the scratchcard payment method.

On June 20, 2013 Indigo was an international winner of the 2013 Ashden Awards, an accolade deemed as the top green energy prize.

What a fantastic innovation! Our thanks, Azuri Technologies for creating Indigo giving an opportunity for more people in Kenya to have lighting which is safer and Earth sustaining.
