After hearing of the refugee crisis, Supreme Master Ching Hai instructed our Association members to render aid, and give assistance to those in need where possible. With the EUR 4,640 relief fund provided by our Association members from Formosa and Thailand, one of our Croatian Association members was able to travel to Macedonia, and bring comfort to the refugees at Tabanovce camp from April 1 to 6, 2016.
At that time, there were approximately 1,000 refugees staying at the camp. Officials were encouraging the refugees to go to Gevgelija camp at Macedonia’s border with Greece. However, the refugees were reluctant to go. They were, hoping that the borders would reopen so they would be able to continue their journey to find a safer home.
Our Association member distributed all the prepared vegan food, clothes and boots for children to the refugees. He also helped in the kitchen, at the information point and around the camp. He noticed that people felt anxious about their future, and their thoughts were constantly on crossing the border to continue to Serbia. He spent time with them, trying to give them some comfort and to make them smile to forget their hardships and the uncertainties, at least for a moment.
